Unfortunately, pets are not permitted at any of our escapes. This policy helps us protect the natural wildlife in the area and maintain a peaceful, undisturbed environment for all our guests. We appreciate your understanding.

What about electricity?

Accepted Answer

Our escapes are completely off-grid and powered by solar energy. This provides sufficient power for LED lighting throughout the accommodation and charging your mobile phone or small devices. There are no standard plug points available, so please plan accordingly. We recommend bringing a power bank if you need to charge multiple devices. This is part of the authentic wilderness experience at Kleinrivier.

Do I need a 4x4 to reach the accommodation?

With the exception of the Stone Mountain Lodge, all of our escapes are accessible with a regular vehicle in good condition, though the final stretch is on gravel roads.

Is there cell phone reception?

Accepted Answer

Cell phone reception is limited throughout the property, which is part of the off-grid experience. Some areas have intermittent signal (Vodacom tends to work best), but we recommend letting family know you may be unreachable at times.

Is there hot water?

Yes! Despite being off-grid, all our escapes have hot water for showers. Most use gas geysers or donkey boilers (wood-fired), so you can enjoy a warm shower after a day on the trails. We'll provide instructions for each system at your escape.

Where can I buy supplies?

The nearest shops are in Uitenhage (approximately 45 minutes away). We recommend stocking up on all food, drinks, and essentials before arriving, as there are no shops nearby. Don't forget braai meat, firewood is usually available on site.

How fit do I need to be for the hiking trails?

Our trails range from easy walks to challenging full-day hikes. Each trail listing includes distance, duration, and difficulty ratings to help you choose. We recommend starting with shorter trails if you're unsure of your fitness level. Always carry water, wear appropriate footwear, and let someone know your planned route.

Is it safe? Are there dangerous animals?

The Groot Winterhoek is home to various wildlife including baboons, antelope, and birds. While there are no dangerous large predators, we advise keeping food secured and not leaving items outside. Snakes are present but rarely seen. Basic wilderness awareness is all that's needed to enjoy a safe stay.
